Association of Japanologists

Japan

The Association of Japanologists is a non-profit organization created in 1994. It has the membership of more than 100 Russian citizens interested in Japan and Japanese Studies. They represent more than 20 Japanese studies centers, located in the Institute the Afro-Asian Studies, Moscow State University, St Petersburg State University, Moscow State Institute of International Relations (University), the Institute of World Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Institute of the Far East of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russian State Humanitarian University, the Far East Federal University (Vladivostok), Kazan State University, Nizhny Novgorod State University and several other scientific centers and universities.

The basic direction of the Association activity is the promotion of Japanese Studies in Russia. The Association keeps in touch with leading research institutes and universities of Russian Federation with Japanese Studies units and departments, accumulates information and organizes Japanese Studies research programs, conferences, lecture courses etc. Besides, in cooperation with Japan Foundation the Association pursues a vast publishing program in the sphere of Japanese Studies. The association publishes the following academic titles:

 

  • Yearbook Japan;
  • Quarterly e-journal “Japanese studies in Russia”;
  • English-speaking journal “Russian Japanology Review”.

 

The Association has published more than 60 text-books and edited books on history, economy, domestic politics, diplomacy, culture and society of Japan and various aspects of Japanese studies.

 Yearbook Japan is the core annual edition of Russian academic community specializing in the sphere Japanese studies. The publication of the yearbook, launched in 1972 by the initiative group of Soviet Japanologists, has not been interrupted ever since. The Yearbook is the tribune and the communication channel of the entire Russian academic community in the field of Japanese studies.

Japanese Studies in Russia is an interdisciplinary peer-reviewed journal focusing on the economic, political and social processes taking place in modern Japan, the problems of Japanese history, literature, linguistics, culture and religion. The journal publishes reports of various academic events in the field of Japanese studies, including conferences, seminars and round tables, as well as book reviews of monographs, textbooks and other academic editions about Japan, published in Russia and abroad.

Russian Japanology Review is an peer-reviewed journal which aims to create an international tribune for both Russian and international scholars to discuss various issues of contemporary and traditional Japan.

All titles of the Association are open-access journals indexed in several international academic platforms, including Scopus, Web of Science, DOAJ etc.

The Association holds annual conferences, seminars and roundtables dedicated to actual problems of contemporary Japan, with the participation of scholars from Russia, Japan and other countries.

 The Association organizes yearly competitions, seminars and academic conferences for the University students in Russia specializing in Japanese studies.

The Association receives financial support from the International Chodiev Foundation (ICF).
